Ella Nora Bulla (nee Rumsey), age 96, passed away on May 29, 2017 at Staten Island University Hospital North. She was the beloved wife of Antonino Bulla. Loving mother of Dr. Dorothy Ortiz-Tulla and William F. Bulla. Cherished grandmother of Dana Ortiz-Tulla and Rayna Bulla. Dear sister of Betty Lou James, Bruce Rumsey and Elizabeth Rumsey.
Mrs. Bulla was born in Burdine, Kentucky on October 16, 1920. At the age of five she moved to Penn Yan, NY, until 1940 when she arrived at the Cherry Street Mission on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. She was a graduate of the Salvation Army Ministry College. While at the mission she was a minister of the Salvation Army. Ella Nora eventually rose to the rank of Captain before retiring from the Salvation Army after eight years. She resided there until she married her husband Antonino and they then moved to the Midland Beach section of Staten Island in 1949. Later on her career took her to the banking industry, where she was employed as a bank teller for twenty-five years for various banks, finally retiring from Richmond County Savings Bank .
Among her activities that she was fond of was being a twenty year member of the Berry House Senior Citizens group where she was cited for her volunteer work while being an active member there. Ella Nora was the oldest surviving descendant of Jenny Wiley, who’s historical life experiences led to the naming of a Kentucky state park in her honor.
