Diamando (Julia) Bontales (nee Panagakos) passed away on July 3, 2017, at the age of 85 in Holmdel, New Jersey. Born in Anavryti, Greece, she immigrated to the United States in 1951 and settled with her aunt and uncle, James and Georgia Katsoris in Port Richmond Center, Staten Island New York. In 1954, Diamando married Louis Bontales and they lived in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn, before settling on Staten Island in 1967, where the couple raised their three sons, Steve, Jack and Peter. Diamando worked for Superior Confections and later worked and retired from St. Vincent's Medical Center. Diamando had many hobbies, which included cooking, gardening, traveling and volunteering for her church. Last summer she enjoyed a trip back to Anavryti and Epirus Greece where she reunited with family and friends. She was a parishioner and proud member of the Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Ladies Philoptochos Society and the Golden Seniors club. Diamando was happiest when she was cooking and entertaining in her Eltingville home for family and friends, or volunteering at the annual Greek Festival on Staten Island.
