Obituary:

Diamando (Julia) Bontales (nee Panagakos) passed away on July 3, 2017, at the age of 85 in Holmdel, New Jersey. Born in Anavryti, Greece, she immigrated to the United States in 1951 and settled with her aunt and uncle, James and Georgia Katsoris in Port Richmond Center, Staten Island New York. In 1954, Diamando married Louis Bontales and they lived in Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn, before settling on Staten Island in 1967, where the couple raised their three sons, Steve, Jack and Peter. Diamando worked for Superior Confections and later worked and retired from St. Vincent's Medical Center. Diamando had many hobbies, which included cooking, gardening, traveling and volunteering for her church. Last summer she enjoyed a trip back to Anavryti and Epirus Greece where she reunited with family and friends. She was a parishioner and proud member of the Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Ladies Philoptochos Society and the Golden Seniors club. Diamando was happiest when she was cooking and entertaining in her Eltingville home for family and friends, or volunteering at the annual Greek Festival on Staten Island.
Diamando was the beloved wife of the late Louis Bontales. She was the loving mother of Steven and his wife Cheryl of Holmdel; and the late Peter and Jack, and Jack’s surviving wife Joanne. She was the cherished grandmother of Christie Pisacano and her husband Nick, Stephanie Karatzia and her husband Tony, and Alaina and Cleoniki. She was the dear sister of John Panagakos, Helen Arniotis, Elizabeth Papas and Peter Panagakos as well as the late Nicholas Panagakos and Gus Panagakos. She was the fond aunt of many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may visit on Thursday July 6 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and from 6:30pm to 9:30pm, with a Trisagion offered by Fr. Panagiotis Lekkas at 7:30pm at the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10314
Funeral Services will be offered at Holy Trinity- St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 1641 Richmond Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314 on Friday July 7 at 10:00AM by Fr. Panagiotis Lekkas.
An interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery – 361 Sharrott Avenue, Staten Island 10309. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Diamando’s memory.
